PERMANENCY POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
Many of our CPYP counties have developed policies and procedures that relate to their permanency efforts. Listed below are actual position descriptions for permanency workers used by these counties. We hope these examples may assist others who are doing similar work.

Kern County Permanency Specialist |

The Permanency Specialist is a SSW III working in the Child Protective Services Bureau through the Department of Human Services. The primary role of the Permanency Specialist is to enhance long-term permanency outcomes for our foster youth. This role also entails engagement of family members, friends and other supportive adults so our foster youth will have "life long" permanent connections. The Permanency Specialist will coordinate Discovery, Engagement, Planning, Decision making, Education and Follow Up Support phases of California Permanency for Youth Project program description.

The Permanency Specialist social worker interviews youth and family members at entry to foster care (and during FR or PP when the case is referred) to identify relatives and other significant connections of the child who may be potential placement and/or permanency resources for the child. As a part of these responsibilities, she outreaches to those individuals to explain how they may stay in contact with the youth and/or request placement or permanency of the youth while in foster care and may conduct Internet searches to locate relatives and potential lifelong connections for the youth. The permanency specialist further supports family engagement, case planning and case-management activities through participation in Team Decision Meetings held at the time of removal, placement change and permanency planning. She evaluates relative and non-relative extended family member homes to determine if they meet licensing standards, and conducts child studies and adoptability assessments for children who have been in foster care 15 of the last 22 months.
